Management and Leadership: The Yin and Yang of Business

An orchestra has many different instruments filling many different roles. To make music, it takes a conductor.

Management and Leadership are two sides of one coin. They are about how to conduct the orchestra.

· Leadership is the art of accomplishing more than the science of management says is possible.

· The manager asks how and when; the leader asks what and why.

· The manager operates within the status quo; the leader challenges it.

· The manager has his eye on the bottom line; the leader has his eye on the horizon.

These sayings describe the symbiotic relationship between management and leadership. A healthy organization needs both. Leadership is Vision. Management is Implementation. They are the yin and yang of business.

“Vision without execution is just hallucination.” Thomas Edison

And execution without vision is a nightmare.

Learn both. Become a student of the possible.

Work for the Dream, not the Green.

Understanding how to better manage and lead are skills to put in service of doing great things. Find goals worth pursuing and projects worth completing as they will potentially bring benefits to many people or solve large-scale problems. There is a wonderful new campaign looking to redefine the idea of a billionaire as someone who positively impacts the lives of a billion people.

Try not to get caught up in working for the money with the idea that the money and the symbols of what it buys will confer prestige. Money is not the end; it is a means to ends. Enough money will come. It is an artifact of doing beneficial things. Let the beneficial accomplishments speak for you and confer the prestige.

Good Luck, Fair Weather, and Godspeed.
